Summary of the Story

A Frog Who Hates Water

Sam is a frog unlike the others—he dislikes water and prefers sitting under toadstools to stay dry. One rainy day, he accidentally breaks off a toadstool, and it lands on his head. Surprisingly, it keeps him dry and becomes his constant companion.

A Wild Journey

Trying to reach his friends across the lake, Sam uses the toadstool like a glider. A gust of wind sends him soaring and eventually drifting across the lake, where his friends mistake him for a monster. Sam and his friend Dexter tumble over a waterfall but survive.

The Secret Past

Dexter reveals a shocking truth:

  • He was once a wizard.
  • Sam was the son of a knight, and both were childhood friends of Princess Briella.
  • Dexter, jealous of Sam and Briella’s love, nearly cast a spell on Sam—but accidentally turned both of them into frogs.

A Kingdom in Trouble

A plague has struck the kingdom, and a former royal guard named Maxwell is imprisoned, wrongly blamed for it. Dexter realizes the plague was caused by magic from his spell.

The Toadstool’s Magic

When Maxwell touches the toadstool stuck on Sam’s head, he is instantly healed. The toadstools at the mountain lake have become a cure for the plague.

Restoring the Kingdom

  • Briella breaks the toadstool off Sam’s head, healing the king.
  • Her kiss breaks Sam’s spell, turning him human again.
  • A piece of the toadstool remains stuck to his head, so it is covered in gold and jewels—becoming the first royal crown.

Happily Ever After

  • Sam and Briella marry, and Sam becomes king.
  • Sam invents the umbrella, inspired by his toadstool.
  • The name “umbrella” comes from the sign maker so overwhelmed with orders that he misspelled the original name, “Umbriella” by leaving the “i” out, making it to read “Umbriella.” The name sticks and is known as umbrella ever since!
  • Dexter chooses to remain a frog at the lake, where he becomes “King of the Lake” and finds happiness with his lady frog.
  • Sam heals the kingdom using the magical toadstools, and peace returns.
